London Life
Today I had a brilliant day out in London. Instead of taking a bus or tube to travel around the city my family and I chose to walk. We were surprised at the amount of wildlife we saw.
Very close to Buckingham Palace we stopped to admire the early snowdrops and watched a heron preening itself, completely unphased by the traffic and people travelling past.
As we walked through St James' park we noticed some green birds high in the trees and heard an unusual screeching sound. We realised they were African parakeets! We discovered that the parakeets living wild in London are ring-neck parakeets. It is thought that there are more than 8,500 breeding pairs living in various areas of the city.
The parakeets in St James' park were really tame and came to feed out of our hands. They were joined by grey squirrels, pigeons, great tits and even a rat, thankfully the rat did not try to feed out of our hands or my Mum would have screamed very loudly!
Have any of you seen the friendly peacocks in Holland Park? We didn't have time to go and find them today but they are on our list of things to find on our next trip to London.
